Business Manager

Paradigm Publishers is seeking a full-time business manager. Preferred candidates will have prior experience in two or more of the following: accounting, bookkeeping, payables, business software (QuickBooks or comparable programs), credits and collection.

Candidate must have excellent written and verbal skills, strong mathematical skills, and excellent organizational skills. Microsoft Word and Excel proficiency required. An ability to quickly and easily learn new computer programs is considered very valuable, especially if the candidate can recommend business software that will facilitate the conduct of business.

The business manager will act as primary liaison between publisher, distributor, banker, and accountant. A primary responsibility will be monitoring cash flow and weighing credit line needs against available funds, including ongoing calculations of the company’s borrow base as related to inventory levels, aging of accounts receivable, ratios of debt to assets, and other banking metrics. Author royalty accounting and processing is another key responsibility. He/She will be responsible for all accounts payable and accounts receivable in the Boulder editorial office, including but not limited to paying all bills, regularly reconciling the bank statement and check register, monitoring payments from consignment accounts, and following up on all unpaid invoices. The business manager will also be the primary HR contact person in the office for health insurance and the retirement benefit plan. Other responsibilities include ordering supplies, completing credit applications, completing insurance applications, liaising with landlord, calculating book cost sheets, and completing and issuing all tax forms.

This is a full time position and ideal for someone with a strong business background who wants to move into publishing—a special kind of business with particular business needs.

1) Acquisitions Publishing Internship

Opening for Spring, Summer, and Fall 2008 editorial internships with Paradigm Publishers, a Boulder-based academic publisher. Paradigm is an independent, editor-owned press that publishes high quality books in the social sciences and humanities.

Interns will work with Acquisitions Editors on manuscript acquisitions and development in the social sciences and humanities with an emphasis on political science, international studies, and education.

Special needs include:

  • Textbook research
  • Book series research
  • Author research
  • Permissions research and acquisition
  • Processing exam copy requests from professors and maintaining exam copy database
  • Website page updates
  • Depending on interest areas, many other areas could be incorporated including manuscript analysis and review, promotional copy development, class testing, etc.
  • As with any internship, responsibilities will include a mix of the mundane and the sublime.

Interns will gain thorough exposure to academic publishing in a small press environment in which various departments work closely together. They will become knowledgeable of key publishing databases and software and will learn the cycles of acquisitions editing. Interns will also learn how scholarly and serious trade books are acquired and the decisions behind the acquisitions.

This is an excellent experience for students interested in political science, international studies, media and communications studies, education, history, or those interested in a future publishing career. Candidates with teaching experience will be especially apt since textbook acquisitions are a priority. A commitment to social justice issues is a priority of the press.

Students should be able to work 10-12 hours per week and will receive a $500 honorarium upon successful completion of the full term of the internship (120 hours).

2. Editorial Production Internship

Opening for Spring, Summer, and Fall 2008 editorial production internships with Paradigm Publishers, a Boulder-based academic publisher. Paradigm is an independent, editor-owned press that publishes high quality books in the social sciences and humanities.

The interns will work with production editors on books in the social sciences and humanities with an emphasis on political science, international studies, education, history, and sociology. There will be an opportunity to learn about the various stages of book production from acquisition through to bound book. Interns will gain a thorough exposure to academic publishing in a small press environment in which various departments work closely together.

This is an excellent experience for students interested in the social sciences and humanities, as well as those interested in a future publishing career. A commitment to social justice issues is a priority of the press.

Possible projects for an editorial production intern include the following:

  • Researching art for inclusion in books
  • Applying for cataloging data from the Library of Congress
  • Corresponding with authors, freelance workers, typesetters, and printers
  • Checking page proof corrections
  • Searching the Web for information needed in a book
  • Checking invoices against estimates
  • Creating charts or diagrams for inclusion in books

The work will vary considerably from day to day—sometimes being routine, other times being more creative. Assignments will be designed with the intern’s strengths and talents in mind, as well as particular interests of the intern.

3) Marketing & Sales Internship

Opening for Spring, Summer, and Fall 2008 marketing and sales internships with Paradigm Publishers, a Boulder-based academic publisher. Paradigm is an independent, editor-owned press that publishes high quality books in the social sciences and humanities.

Interns will work directly with the Marketing & Sales Director to put together key contacts lists, execute marketing plans for spring titles, maintain marketing databases, create sales materials, and assist in other marketing and sales tasks. Interns will receive initial training from Marketing & Sales Director in basic duties, and will continue to learn by working directly with Director on seasonal tasks. Exposure to college marketing and promotion will also be a part of the internship. Intern will be evaluated twice during the semester and will also have the opportunity to evaluate their internship experience.

Interns will gain thorough exposure to academic publishing in a small press environment in which various departments work closely together. They will become knowledgeable of key publishing databases and software and will learn the rhythms of marketing efforts and sales seasons. Interns will also learn how decisions are made regarding promoting and selling scholarly and serious trade books.

This is an excellent experience for students interested in media studies, marketing and publicity, sales, or those interested in a future publishing career.

Students should be able to work ten to twelve hours per week and will receive a $500 honorarium upon successful completion of the internship (120 hours).
